| Part Number | I was under the impression that cross was a decent brand of pen. Now I realize I was wrong. The first four to five millimeters of every stroke is dry unless you over pressurize the cartridge to get the ink to flow correctly then it drops too much ink on the paper and leaks. It is possible I got a dud but I own about 10 fountain pens… Don’t waste your money just go buy a lamy. I really wanted to like this pen I really did. Also the medium nib is ridiculously thick. I chose to keep this fountain pen and not return it so that I could really try to love it… Don’t waste your money it’s cheaply made or quality control is not up to standard. Either way I expected better from cross and I’m disappointed. I will not be purchasing any more cross products in the future and I own three other cross products that just don’t seem to make it into my bag for daily use. Good luck trying to find replacement nibs for this pen…………you have been warned lol |
| Weight | Well, I may update this with a better rating and review after the “converter” arrives [and, by the way, so-called “converters” are actually far more like the corresponding parts on original fountain pens, than are the disposable cartridges, so I just don’t like calling them “converters”].And if the right areas on this pens nib do “break in” nicely after a couple days, I’ll mention that, too.In the meantime: I really wanted to love this pen, as I’d had my eye on it for maybe a year before I really actually did need yet another fountain pen. So, after providing the 40 bucks for this, I expected it to berather nicer than, say, the somewhat dubious “Picasso” brand pen it was replacing. And, well, as for visual aesthetics, I can say that this pen doesn’t have the somewhat hokey “Picasso” “signature” on it (of course!) –or anything like that, which that ($20) pen had emblazoned on it (despite the fact that Picasso never even visited China—but I suppose that’s rather off point. At the same time, though, that *Picasso” (sort of marble-blue) pen feels considerably “sturdier” than this pen, without being overly heavy. This *Cross* pen really doesn’t feel heavy [that’s good], but it also doesn’t feel all that well made–even relative to the (cheaper by $20) “Picasso” pen.Also–and related: yes, on this “Beverly,” there are some chrome (or stainless steel or whatever) “appointments,” but that bit is a tad misleading, as the shiny top of the pen [yeah–under that cap in the picture] and the silvery part where you grip the pen, cannot, I think, be any decent metal at all. It somehow feels kind of plasticity. If it is metal, maybe it’s cheap, thin aluminum, with plastic underneath? Hmm–if so, well, I’m not much into holding onto something much of the day that’s been associated with the development of Alzheimers [aluminum].For you folks who prefer cartridges: I’m not a cartridge user, myself, but I thought I’d use the two that came with the pen, before I got the sold-separately “converter”– I wanted to ensure I liked the pen first. Well, I haven’t ensured that I like the pen first [see above], but I do want to mention to the cartridge folks that these two cartridges that came with this pen–well, I hope they’re, like, “ultra-mini-cartridges” for trying out the pen with bit of doodling or something, because they contained ridiculously little ink. Seriously, one cartridge lasted a day of very intermittent writing, and the other saw me through 30 minutes of note-jotting—and that’s it. No more ink in these particular cartridges. (Msybe Cross thinks tthis “Feminine” Beverly pen doesn’t require sufficient ink because, well, we femine folks [um, women for the most part] don’t have much to write about, anyway. No, surely not. But, seriously, do *pens* have to be “lady pens” [“feminine”] or “guy pens”? Can’t we all just decide we like this or that pen without the world being even further bifurcated between “serious/masculine” and “delicate/feminine” *pens*?? Okay, enough social commentary.]Anyhow, though (and regardless of your gender), if you like to use cartridges, you might want to ensure this one takes cartridges that hold more than what seemed to be about three drops of ink.The nib on this Cross “Beverly” is perhaps a little better/smoother-writing than the $20 Picasso (Chinese-brand) pen—but really nothing special (or even worth $20 more) in my book. But, yes, these pens are better than, e.g., those “Pilot Metropolitan Collection” pens that are bizarrely overrated and most others that are $20 or less, I imagine.So, if the converter (which I went ahead and ordered) isn’t as irritation-provoking as these tiny cartridges that came with this pen, and if I discover that the two particular, seemingly non-metal, shiny parts are not aluminum but some benign (but still cheap) material, I’ll check back in and give this another star, possibly. |
| Dimensions | I liked the first one I bought last month, I decided ordered another. Now I have one at home and one to travel with me. It has a nice weight without being heavy. It feels good holding it and writes smoothly. The ink dries quickly without bleeding through the pages. I’m using one for journaling and find I can write on both sides of the page. If I had an improvement to recommend, it would be that the cap it a bit hard to take off and it doesn’t stay on the other end when I’m writing. Perhaps the cap will eventually come off easier after the pen has been used for a while. In the case of it not staying in place on top as I write, perhaps the pen is not designed to be used this way. I do have a fondness for longer pens. It comes in a sturdy, giftable box. Beautiful gift for any occasion and for anyone who uses a pen. |

| Material | I had to write a review for this pen after I saw some of the more recent reviews, which I believe to be unfair. I’ve been using this pen for about a year now and it has served me very well. As a college student, I use this pen for extensive note taking on a daily basis. My notes, in turn, come out looking beautiful. The lines of the nib flow well, and there is beautiful variation in the thickness of the line. Being a fountain pen, it does take a moment for the ink to begin flowing or the occasional shake, but once it begins the flow is wet and constant. The pen is heavy and the weight is evenly distributed, making it easy to balance and write with. It does come with four ink refills, and they are nice, however I purchased a refillable cartridge and variety of inks to use instead. The pen is easy to clean and flush. I flush it about once every two weeks, and it keeps the flow moving. Overall, a wonderful beginner fountain pen and well with the price. I highly recommend it. |
